Episiotomy is an intentional surgical incision (3- 4 cm), made in perineum from vaginal orifice laterally after informed consent with the aim of increasing soft tissue outlet dimensions to help with child birth. Two types of episiotomy include midline and mediolateral types of episiotomy. Episiotomy involves suturing of the vaginal layers, muscles and the skin of perineum. It is an intentional second degree perineal tear. The complications of episiotomy include bleeding, pain, scarring of the wound, hematoma formation and necrotizing fasciitis etc.

Obstetrics focuses on caring for and maintaining a woman’s overall health during maternity. This includes pregnancy, labor, childbirth, and the postpartum period. Gynaecology on the other hand focuses on women’s bodies and their reproductive health. It includes the diagnosis, treatment, and care of women’s reproductive system. This includes vagina, uterus, ovaries, and fallopian tubes. Gynaecology also includes screening for and treating issues associated with women’s breasts.
