What it is:
Osteosarcoma is a malignant (cancerous) tumor that originates from the cells that form bone.

It's the most common type of primary bone cancer in children and adolescents.
The cancer cells in osteosarcoma produce osteoid, an early form of bone tissue, but the bone tissue formed is not as strong as normal bone.
Osteosarcoma can spread to other parts of the body, most commonly the lungs.

Who is affected:

Osteosarcoma most commonly affects children, teenagers, and young adults, with the peak incidence between 10 and 24 years old.

It can also occur in older adults, particularly those with a history of radiation therapy or Paget's disease of bone.
Males are slightly more likely to develop osteosarcoma than females.

Symptoms:

Bone pain, especially near a joint.
Swelling or a lump around the affected bone.
Pain that worsens with activity or at night.
Bone fracture without a clear cause.
Limping or difficulty walking.
Limitation of motion in the affected joint.

Diagnosis:

Physical examination: Doctors will assess the affected area for swelling, pain, and tenderness.

Imaging tests: X-rays, CT scans, and MRI scans can help visualize the tumor and determine its location and size.
Biopsy: A sample of the tumor tissue is taken and examined under a microscope to confirm the diagnosis.
