I have always wanted to try this. I think it looks cool.
Many put up these as a piece of wall art. And you can do that. But I made this to be a trivet from start. It was really fun making this, and this technique could be used for other projects.
This is meant to be used as a coaster under a hot pan or kettle or something to protect the surface underneath. I have been told they are called differently in different countries. Like heatmat, coaster or grytunderlägg. :-)
This was made from a recycled piece of cut off plank. It's not very flat, but for this project it does not need to be. I sanded it roughly using a belt sander and then traced with a marker a pattern.
I used a small multi tool and a router bit to make the first cuts, then a round hollowing chisel to remove most of the material creating ridges. Then I used a small round sanding bit (to the multitool), a palm sander and then finally handsanded the last bit.
Roundover with the router before applying some dark stain.
