While rafting the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon, I rowed straight into a powerful rapid called Waltenberg… without realizing what it was.
We thought we were approaching a small, easy rapid. The guidebook even described it that way. So I stayed calm, lined up the boat, and rowed straight through.
Only later did we realize what had actually happened.
Waltenberg is considered a serious rapid, and if I had known that ahead of time, I probably would have handed the oars to someone with more experience. Instead, believing it was easy allowed me to stay relaxed and run the rapid cleanly.
That moment became one of the most powerful lessons the river has ever given me.
Sometimes the stories we tell ourselves shape what we believe we are capable of. And sometimes, when we don’t know how difficult something is supposed to be, we discover strengths we didn’t know we had.
This story is part of Wild Presence, an ongoing series sharing real experiences from life close to the land — wildlife encounters, wilderness adventures, river journeys, and the moments that change how we see ourselves in the natural world.
New Wild Presence stories are shared here each Sunday.
