Why Some Kids Don’t Like Sharing

Many children find sharing difficult, especially at a young age. This behavior is a normal part of development and does not always mean a child is selfish or rude. Young kids are still learning how to understand emotions, take turns, and trust that their belongings will be returned.

One common reason children dislike sharing is a strong sense of ownership. Toys and personal items can feel very important to them, and giving them to someone else may create anxiety. Some children also fear that their toy might be broken, lost, or not returned.

Another reason is limited emotional control. Young children often struggle to manage frustration, disappointment, or jealousy. When another child wants something they are using, they may react by refusing to share.

Children also learn behavior from their environment. If they do not often see sharing modeled at home or in social settings, they may need more guidance and practice to understand its value.

Parents and caregivers can help by teaching sharing gently through games, turn-taking activities, and positive encouragement. Praising cooperative behavior and staying patient can help children develop sharing skills over time.
