Welcome to another iconic stop on 'The Review by Kripal Amanna: Bengaluru's 90s Restaurants Series'! Today, we're diving deep into the heart of authentic Karnataka cuisine at Mavalli Tiffin Rooms (MTR) Lalbagh – a name synonymous with Bengaluru's culinary identity for nearly a century, and a definitive landmark for anyone who lived here in the 80s and 90s.
MTR isn't just a restaurant; it's a living piece of history. Established in 1924 as the 'Brahmin Coffee Club,' it evolved into the MTR we know today, setting gold standards for hygiene, quality, and of course, its legendary food.
Join me as I take on the magnificent MTR Lunch Thali – a truly epic vegetarian feast featuring over 20 sumptuous items! From the refreshing Kosambri, vibrant Bendekayi Palya, and fluffy Poori Sagoo, to the classic Masala Dosæ. We then moved through multiple rice courses: fragrant Chitranna, comforting Bisi Bele Bath, cooling Mosaru Bajji, rich Anna Sambar, zesty Anna Rasam, and even creamy Curd Rice! The grand finale included the essential Fruit Salad with Ice Cream, traditional Paan, and a Date Halwa.
I made sure to arrive early, even before opening, and was greeted by a queue of eager diners already waiting for their lunch tokens – a testament to MTR's timeless appeal, even decades after its prime in the 90s. I also managed to get an exciting glimpse into the bustling kitchens, seeing the magic firsthand: pooris puffing up, rava idlis steaming, and mini masala dosa being expertly roasted for the lunch rush.
In this video, I'll not only share my honest review of every incredible dish but also delve briefly into MTR's fascinating origins – how this legendary lunch thali came to be, and its enduring legacy that cemented its place as a 90s Bengaluru icon.
Did MTR Lalbagh live up to its legendary status? Watch till the end to find out!
Don't forget to like, share, and subscribe for more deep dives into Bengaluru's iconic restaurants from the 90s!
Happy eating!
