Moving Giant Topiary Trees
These trees aren’t just dug up and moved. They’re shaped, lifted, and replanted with care. Workers start by digging a wide circle around the trunk, leaving a root ball that keeps the tree alive. The soil is trimmed into a solid block, then wrapped to hold everything together. Many of these trees are Chinese banyan or Ginkgo biloba, species known to handle replanting well. Their branches are pruned into layers, a style called Niwaki, which makes the canopy look like stacked green clouds. This method comes from traditional East Asian garden design and can take years of patient trimming. Once ready, cranes hoist the massive root ball, sometimes weighing several tons, onto trucks for transport. The trees are then replanted in parks, gardens, or private estates. Support ropes keep them steady until the roots grow back strong. These Niwaki-style topiary trees aren’t just decoration—they’re living sculptures shaped by skill and tradition.
