The Examinations Council of Zambia (ECZ) has scrapped the use of separate answer sheets during examinations.

Under the new innovation, candidates will be required to write their answers directly within the question paper.

Speaking at a media breakfast meeting, Education Minister Douglas Syakalima announced that the change will take effect with the 2025 General Certificate of Education and Junior Secondary External Examinations.

Mr. Syakalima highlighted that the successful implementation of these innovations has been achieved using externally generated resources.

He further noted that the 2025 Junior Secondary External and Junior Secondary School Leaving Examinations will be the last of their kind.

This change is due to the new education structure: pupils who enter Form 1 in 2026 will progress directly to Form 2 in 2027, without needing to sit junior secondary exams.

Additionally, Mr. Syakalima explained that learners who do not perform well in the junior secondary examinations will have an option to restart Form 1 in 2026 and attempt the School Certificate Ordinary Level Examinations in 2029.
