Chow mein is probably one of the most well-known dishes available from western Chinese takeaways. How authentically Chinese it is will always be disputed, but it does seem that something like modern chow mein was brought to the US by Chinese immigrants around about 1850. Chow mein simply means 'fried noodles', and it is important to stir-fry them, not just boil them. I'm using pork for this video, but chow mein can also be made with chicken, beef, prawns or tofu. Chow mein is a very simple dish - it's very easy to make and totally delicious.
