In this presentation I will be introducing you to a set of career development learning (CDL) modules designed for accessibility and career practitioners. These modules will give you foundational skills and knowledge in providing CDL to people with disabilities.
The content was developed over a 12-month period throughout 2022 by a team of students with lived experience of having a disability and educators from various disability advocacy, education and CDL backgrounds. The voice of people with disabilities and their lived experience, strength-based language and principles of the social model of disability were a strong focus throughout this development.
The four key focus areas are:
• Communication
• The rights of people with disabilities in the workplace
• If and how to disclose disability in the workplace
• Australian employability programs, initiatives and funding available to people with disabilities
The modules were a part of a broader project titled Career Development Learning Hub for Students with Disability, led by Professor Sarah O’Shea (Curtin University) and Dr Kylie Austin (University of Wollongong). The project aimed to investigate the range of existing career development learning (CDL) resources for students with disability, critically engage with best practice, collaborate with universities across Australia to pilot and disseminate examples of their findings.
The collective works for this broader project, including the modules discussed in this presentation are housed on ADCET’s website and can be found at www.adcet.edu.au/resources/cdl-hub
