“Be Cheerful, Enjoy Your Life” — that’s the phrase written above a smiling skeleton in the famous Hatay mosaic. But is that really what it says? Spoiler: probably not.

This piece of ancient Roman art is part of a long tradition of memento mori — Latin for “remember that you will die.” Found on everything from Roman mosaics to silver cups, these images weren’t just morbid. They were reminders to embrace life, because you never know what fate has in store.
