"We were experiencing a gradual decline in population, so we opened this library with the aim of revitalizing the region."

This library opened six years ago. Compared to before the relocation, the number of visitors has tripled.

The number of bookstores selling books was 24,237 in fiscal year 1988, but according to the latest data (fiscal year 2025), it has finally fallen below 10,000, to 9,993.

While the number of bookstores is decreasing, why are libraries increasing their presence?

■ Ishikawa Prefectural Library Exceeds 1.37 Million Visitors: Becomes a "Tourist Spot" with Photography Allowed

The Ishikawa Prefectural Library in Kanazawa City had over 1.37 million visitors in fiscal year 2025.

According to former library staff member Horacio, the reason is that they allowed photography inside the library, making it like a tourist spot.

Normally, photography is not encouraged in libraries, but by creating various photo opportunities, they are attracting visitors from outside the prefecture.

I think this could potentially be a reason for people to move to the area.

Books are enjoyable enough as they are, so if the library space itself has an entertainment value, children will want to go to the library even more, and it could help increase the number of book lovers.
