The desire to simply not exist — also described as the wish to disappear or to escape existence — is a passive emotional response often rooted in depression, trauma, burnout, or existential overwhelm.
It is not the same as wanting to die or planning suicide. Instead, it reflects a quiet, painful longing to pause life, to be free from the emotional heaviness that makes daily living feel unbearable. People experiencing this may think, “I wish I could fall asleep and never wake up,” not because they want to end their life, but because they no longer feel able to endure it.
This emotional state is different from active suicidal ideation, which involves thoughts or intentions to end one’s life. The desire to disappear is a form of passive suicidal ideation, meaning there is no intention or plan to cause harm. It often arises late at night, in moments of silence or stillness, when the weight of unspoken struggles becomes too much.
