Everyone in Australia should know snake bite first aid 🐍

Administering correct first aid gives snake bite victims a 99% chance of survival, even when bitten by the likes of the Eastern Brown snake.

And for us hikers this is especially important as we are putting ourselves at a greater risk of snake encounters when hiking in the bush.

Here's what you need to do in the event of a snake bite:

1) Check for danger, ensure the snake has moved on.

2) Call for help immediately. Don't rely on mobile reception or GPS devices if they don't use the COSPAS-SARSAT satellite network (when in remote areas).

3) Begin wrapping the bitten limb with a compression bandage from the tip of the limb all the way up to the body. It should be tight but not so tight that it restricts blood flow. You can use a splint if it will help you to remain still.

4) Mark on the bandage where the bite wound is so doctors can know immediately where to look.

5) Then you need to remain as still and as calm as possible. Snake venom moves through your lymphatic system and spreads with muscle movement - so sit still!

6) If you can remember any identifying characteristics of the snake that bit you this can help doctors, otherwise don't be concerned as they can swap the bite wound - and most bites are treated with the same anti-venom.

You should know that it is unlikely that you will be bitten by an Australian snake if you practice avoidance. Don't antagonise snakes, leave them alone and they will leave you alone. It is a myth that snakes are aggressive - they are defensive creatures and want nothing more than to get to safety.

Disclaimer I am not a doctor or professionally trained. The advice I am giving is advice learnt through wilderness first aid, not a medical degree.
