This Outer Side video explores a geographical question many people notice on a map but rarely stop to ask: if Maine is part of the United States, why aren’t New Brunswick and Nova Scotia American too? Why are they Canadian and part of Canada?
At the center of this story are Canada’s Atlantic provinces, two regions that seem to naturally extend from the northeastern United States. With coastlines facing the same ocean and borders touching Maine, they look like they could have easily ended up on the U.S. side of the map.
The answer stretches back to the 1700s. These lands were held firmly through wars, revolutions, and shifting alliances. When the American Revolution broke out, these regions became a key part to remain Canadian.
As borders were negotiated and treaties signed, nearly all remaining disputes were settled, locking New Brunswick and Nova Scotia outside the United States. When Canada was formed in 1867, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick became founding members, sealing their future north of the border. But what lead to it? Watch to uncover the geography, history, and turning points behind why these provinces are Canadian—and how history, not geography, ultimately decides borders.
