You hear people say “due to the fact” and “the reason why,” and there’s nothing ungrammatical about it. Yet, these expressions have a style issue: wordiness. Let’s look at these wordy constructions and see how you can improve or get rid of them for a better style, especially in writing. The reason why is due to the fact that style plays a role in formal expression.

ABOUT THIS SERIES
The Grammar and Style Tidbits series has short lessons on specific topics in standard English grammar, writing style, and the mechanics of writing. It often contrasts prescriptive and descriptive grammar use and usage. This way you know when it’s appropriate to use a construction in formal, written or spoken, academic English versus in informal, spoken, everyday English. The series is designed for enrichment but is appropriate for intermediate and advanced English-Language Learners, or ESL students, as well. For many lessons, you can also find more information on our website. at snaplanguage.io/lessons
