I think the title of my memoir might be The Accidental Activist. I haven't always shared how I advocate for reducing screen use in schools, or better protection of children's data and privacy, or provide public testimony to shape policy.
But it is something I do quite a bit.
I do it because I want to complement the things I say in my work with families and schools with trying to actually make changes in the industry.
I realized that if I was going to talk my talk, I'd also better walk my walk.
Do I get nervous? Sure, though testifying online is a lot less scary than testifying in person.
Will it matter? I hope so. Public testimony is entered into a public record that will help inform policy decisions around issues I care about. That matters a lot.
Can anyone do it? YES! And it can start with your local school board or city council. Find out their stance on issues you care about, then share your view.
If you want tips or help on how to get started, let me know.
Yes, we should work within our own families to become more tech-intentional. But it is also powerful to speak out to those who make the policy decisions that affect the very conflicts we experience at home.
Walking the walk of the talk we talk.
