This is, of course, due to his use of the reverse-blade Japanese sword. Interestingly, it's actually based on the real-life historical reversed katana, or sakaboto, in Japan. It is believed to be either from Edo period or early Meiji era. The reasonable explanation for this is that the sword was crafted not for war but for peace. The design of the weapon forces its wielder to use it in a complex manner, which will make the holder reconsider before attempting to use it for lethal purposes.
