In my recent lecture for the Theodore Sedgwick Distinguished Lecture Series at the Filson Historical Society in Louisville, KY, I spoke about why Tech-Intentional™ Schools are the Future—and why it matters.
Most of us grew up thinking of computers as tools—word processors, research aids, and typing programs. But today’s computers are no longer just tools; 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗺𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀. Just like social media platforms, in schools today, gamified "learning" apps, AI "tutors," and engagement-driven platforms turn classrooms into sources of profit for technology companies and increase the daily amount of time children are spending on screens (most recent estimate is 7.5 hours per day, on average, for 8- to 18-year-olds...and that is time spent 𝘰𝘶𝘵𝘴𝘪𝘥𝘦 of school.)
Knowingly or not, schools are welcoming in the same persuasively-designed technologies that powers social media, making focus and deep learning harder than ever.
If EdTech is intentionally designed to keep kids engaging on a screen instead of engaging with teachers, peers, and real-world learning, can we really call it education?
It’s time to rethink the role of technology in schools and put children, relationships and teachers—not screentime—first.
