Veteran journalist N. Ram shared a detailed analysis of the Tamil Nadu elections, stating that the high voter turnout—touching nearly 85 percent—is “healthy but not historic.” He explained that the spike in turnout percentage is largely due to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, which reduced the total number of voters. In absolute terms, the increase in votes remains modest and follows a normal growth trend. Crucially, Ram dismissed the common assumption that high turnout indicates anti-incumbency, emphasizing that there is no empirical evidence linking higher voting percentages with governments being voted out. He cited examples from states like West Bengal and Odisha where incumbents retained power despite high participation. On the political contest, Ram described the entry of Vijay as a significant new factor, making the election triangular. However, he suggested that the impact of this third force may hurt the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam more than the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam.
He also highlighted shifting voter dynamics, particularly among women, noting that welfare measures introduced by the current government may have strengthened its support base.
