Jami Baayd, MSPH, conducted qualitative research on maternal health in Morocco. She found that primary care and tertiary care for women delivering babies was fraught with access problems. Her research uncovered stories of bureaucratic barriers, transportation barriers, and healthcare provider inaccessibility. Lay midwives met women’s needs in practical ways the formal healthcare system could not, yet maternal mortality remains unacceptably high.
