VIDEO DESCRIPTION
Igor Lytvynchuk, a 37-year-old businessman from Covington, Washington, was caught on camera throwing a rock at Lani — a critically endangered Hawaiian monk seal — off the coast of Lahaina, Maui on May 6, 2026. When confronted by a witness on the beach, Igor Lytvynchuk said: "I don't care, I'm rich, fine me. I can pay for it."
The video went viral instantly.
Igor Lytvynchuk is the owner of three shipping and logistics companies based in Kent, Washington — IL Logistics Inc., Transridge Inc., and BFI Transport Inc. After the footage spread online, a local confronted Igor Lytvynchuk on the beach and beat him up. A Hawaiian state senator publicly announced the person who did it would receive an official letter of recommendation.
Igor Lytvynchuk was detained by conservation officers but invoked his right to legal counsel and refused to make a statement. He was released. No charges have been filed as of this video — but the case has been handed to NOAA's Office of Law Enforcement for federal review, and Maui's mayor has vowed to prosecute to the fullest extent of the law.
People online have been calling for Igor Lytvynchuk to be deported. Lani the monk seal was not hurt.
Hawaiian monk seals are one of the most endangered marine mammals on Earth, with only around 1,400 remaining. Throwing a rock at one is a federal offense under the Marine Mammal Protection Act and the Endangered Species Act — carrying fines up to $50,000 and potential imprisonment.
