How can the Central Government take direct control of a State? 🤔
The answer lies in Article 356 — also known as President’s Rule.
When a State Government fails to function according to the Constitution,
the President can take direct control — on the advice of the Union Government.
This happens when there’s a breakdown of constitutional machinery. ⚖️
✅ The State Legislature is dissolved.
✅ The Governor runs the State on behalf of the President.
✅ Parliament makes laws for that State.
It’s meant to be a constitutional safeguard,
but has often been used as a political weapon.
That’s why the Supreme Court in the S.R. Bommai Case (1994) limited its misuse —
declaring that President’s Rule is subject to judicial review.
