Abnormal lung sounds that include crackles (formerly called rales), stridor, wheezes (formerly called rhonchi), pleural friction rub, and stridor. There are two types of abnormal breath sounds such as discontinuous and continuous. Discontinuous sounds include: coarse crackles, fine crackles, and pleural friction rub. Continuous sounds include: low-pitched, monophonic wheeze & high-pitched, polyphonic wheeze, and stridor. Fine crackles sound like high-pitch, crackling noises mainly on inspiration and can't be cleared when coughing. Coarse crackles are low-pitch, wet bubbling sounds that can occur mainly during inspiration but can extend into expiration. Pleural friction rub is a harsh, grating sound heard during inspiration and expiration. Low-pitched, monophonic wheezes are heard mainly in expiration and have a low-pitched whistling tune or whine with ONE sound quality. High-pitch, polyphonic wheezes are heard mainly in expiration and have a high-pitched musical instrument tune with MORE THAN ONE sound quality. Stridor is heard during inspiration and is a high-pitched whistling or gasping sound with a harsh sound quality.
