Birthdays are incredibly special to us—not like parties or vacations, but as an extra moment to spend together as family. This is the first time in over quarter years that we've been apart for a birthday. I had planned to surprise her with a visit but hadn't given any hint that I'd be coming just for her on her special day.

She had been asking me to come because she couldn't imagine celebrating without me. She even cried when I told her I couldn’t make it. I explained that it was a festival day, and I had to be with my in-laws for the pooja, making it hard to travel. She said, "I can't celebrate without you; how can I? We've been together for every birthday, you shopping for me and me for you. This year, I did it all alone. It's hard for me, but I can't disappoint Mom and Dad, who are trying so hard to make this special. That's okay though—promise me you'll be with me for my next birthday?" I promised, but little did she know, I was already planning to be there this year and every year, not missing a single birthday.
