Léo Major, the one-eyed Canadian war hero, was the only Canadian soldier to receive the Distinguished Conduct Medal twice — once in World War II and again in the Korean War. Born in 1921, Major fought with unmatched courage despite losing an eye on D-Day. In 1945, during the liberation of Zwolle, Netherlands, he single-handedly drove out German forces overnight, saving the city from Allied bombardment. Refusing to give up after the death of his comrade, he used daring tactics and sheer will to make the enemy believe a massive Canadian attack was underway. Six years later, in Korea, Major led his men in capturing and defending a critical hill against overwhelming Chinese forces, earning his second DCM.
