How to do a Veneer Patch 🪵

The Process: 📋

Step 1: Find a spare piece of veneer. You want to ensure its the same wood species with a good match in color and the grain pattern.

Step 2: Using a straight edge and a razor blade cut the damaged area to give it a clean crisp line. Double Sided tape (as shown) or a clamp can be used to hold the straight edge in place. Also remove any old glue etc in the patched area.

Step 3: Apply painters tape over the patch area and firmly secure it. Use your finger nail to depress the tape into the patch area essentuially tracing the edge.

Step 4: Use a razor blade to cut the outline of the patch. Use the edge of the existing veneer as a guide for your blade.

Step 5: Move the newly cut patch template onto the spare piece of veneer.

Step 6: Cut the patch out using your razor blade in the pattern of the tape. If a veneer patch is on the edge of a peice (as shown), I like to leave the back edhe oversized. This allows for excess material that can be used if fine adjustments are needed.

Step 7: Glue and clamp down the veneer patch. I use blue painters tape to hold the patch in place so the clamp doesnt move it.

Step 8: Sand the patch and surrounding area flush

Step 9: Stain then seal or just Seal the piece (I just used @Zinsser Sealcoat) and assess the color of the patch to the surrounding area.

Step 10: Color correct as needed. In my case the patch was way too dark so I lightened it using Mohawk Blendal powders and sealcoat. You’ll see it’s not perfect but thats because I know it’ll blend further once I apply toner later.

Step 11: Finish the piece with your finish schedule of choice. I sprayed toner and clear coat in this example.

Step 12: Admire your work. 🤩
