All is not well in the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam after the recent election drubbing in Tamil Nadu, with the newly elected legislators sharply divided on electing their Legislature Party leader. While one group supports party general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami, a larger group is throwing its weight behind former Minister S.P. Velumani.
On Monday, after the swearing-in of all the legislators was over, a letter, purportedly signed by a group of legislators of the AIADMK stating that Mr. Palaniswami had been elected the Leader of the Legislature Party, was submitted to the Pro-tem Speaker M.V. Karuppaiah at his chamber. As per media reports, the general secretary got the backing of 17 of the 47 MLAs belonging to the AIADMK, though a member of the Palaniswami camp claimed it was 24.
The Vijay-led TVK claimed ‘victory’ earlier in the day as senior party leader Aadhav Arjuna showed a letter of support from the VCK. IUML, a DMK ally, also extended support to TVK, pushing its strength to 120, while the Tamil Nadu halfway mark is 118. The CPI and CPI(M), which have two MLAs each, formally extended support to TVK and handed over letters backing the party. The nail-biting political uncertainty that prevailed in Tamil Nadu over the last few days finally came to an end on Saturday (May 9, 2026) evening after Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) president and leader of the State’s single largest party C. Joseph Vijay called on Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar at Lok Bhavan in Chennai, staking claim to form the government with the support of 120 MLAs-elect in the 234-member House.
When the results came out on Monday, the superstar and his party shocked most political analysts by upending the state's political landscape and breaking the nearly six-decade duopoly of the two Dravidian parties, the DMK and the AIADMK.
Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam won 108 seats on its own, emerging as the single-largest party in the election.
