When the British amalgamated the Northern and Southern Protectorates in 1914 to create modern Nigeria, Lagos was already the most vibrant city. It was the main port, strategically located on the coast, facilitating trade with Europe and other parts of the world. This status as a hub for trade and commerce made Lagos not just an economic center, but also the political nerve of Nigeria. Colonial administrators were based in Lagos, and it became the de facto capital of the new, amalgamated Nigeria.
