Every year on May 1, Gujarat Day, commonly referred to as Gujarat Sthapana Divas, is observed. According to the Bombay Reorganisation Act, Bombay was split into two states in 1960.
Gujarat is derived from Sanskrit (Gurjar-Rashtra).
It has the longest coastline in India along its Kathiawar region. The length of the Gujarat coastline is about 1600 km surrounded by the Arabian Sea.
Gujarat is also known as the Jewel of Western India.
Ahmedabad is the administrative centre of Ahmedabad district, and was the capital of Gujarat from 1960 to 1970; the capital was shifted to Gandhinagar after that.

The state hosts an international kite festival every year.
