“Although” is a subordinating conjunction (sounds scary I know) used to introduce a contrast between two ideas.

It shows that one thing happens or is true despite another thing.

Here’s how it works:

1. To Show Contrast

It introduces a clause that contrasts with the main clause.
Example:
Although it was raining, we went for a walk.
(It was raining = contrast, but the main action still happened.)

2. Position in a Sentence

You can place the although-clause either at the beginning or middle of a sentence:
Beginning:
Although she was tired, she finished her work.
Middle:
She finished her work, although she was tired.

Both are correct, putting it at the beginning makes the contrast more emphatic.

3. Difference from “But”

“Although” and “but” cannot usually be used together.
❌ Although it was raining, but we went outside. (incorrect)
✅ Although it was raining, we went outside.

4. Formal Tone

“Although” sounds a bit more formal than though (which can often be used in casual speech).
Though it was raining, we went outside. ✅ (more casual)
