In the early 1930s, American inventor Brooks Walker introduced an unusual solution to one of driving’s biggest challenges, parallel parking. His idea was demonstrated on a modified 1933 Packard, which featured a retractable fifth wheel mounted at the rear of the car.
When activated, this extra wheel would drop down using a hydraulic system, lifting the rear tires slightly off the ground. Once engaged, the driver could move the car sideways into a parking space, making tight parking far easier than with conventional steering alone. At a time when cars were becoming larger and urban streets more crowded, this was a remarkably forward-thinking innovation.
The system worked effectively in demonstrations and gained attention for its practicality. However, despite its ingenuity, it never entered mass production. The reasons were mainly high manufacturing costs, added mechanical complexity, and maintenance concerns, which made it impractical for everyday use.
