With a population of over 3 million, Pune ranks as the 9th largest city in India. Its roots go deep. Known as Punnaka in the 8th century, it began as a modest agricultural settlement at the confluence of the Mula and Mutha rivers.

Pune rose to prominence in the 17th century as the hometown of Shivaji the legendary founder of the Maratha Empire. A brilliant strategist, Shivaji led daring guerrilla campaigns against the Mughals and built iconic forts that still stand across Maharashtra. He spent his early years here, at Lal Mahal, the red palace. While the original was destroyed, a reconstructed version can be visited today. By the 18th century, Pune had become the de facto capital of the Maratha Confederacy. While the empire stretched across much of India, its powerful prime ministers, or Peshwas, governed from Pune until 1818, when, after the 3rd Anglo-Maratha war, the British took control of the city. Under colonial rule, Pune became a key military and administrative hub—nicknamed the "Monsoon Capital" of the Bombay Presidency. It was in this period that one of Pune’s most beloved landmarks was built—the Dagdusheth Halwai Ganpati Temple. Financed by a wealthy businessman in the late 19th century, this richly adorned temple is a vibrant symbol of the city’s spiritual heart.

Pune also played a pivotal role in India’s fight for independence. In 1942, after launching the Quit India Movement, Mahatma Gandhi was arrested and imprisoned here at the Aga Khan Palace, along with his wife Kasturba and secretary Mahadev Desai. Today, the palace stands as a solemn memorial to the freedom struggle

In modern times, Pune has evolved into a dynamic hub of education, technology, and industry. With prestigious institutions and a youthful, intellectual vibe, it proudly carries the nickname: “Oxford of the East.” Whether you come for its history, its temples, or its modern energy—Pune offers a fascinating blend of the old and the new.
