No cars. Just nature. It was this simple promise that lured French designer Charlotte Biltgen to sign up to life on the water, just ten minutes west of Paris.

In the twenty years since, the family’s rituals have evolved accordingly. Summers mean waterskiing, barbecues on deck, or boat rides along the river. Winters, meanwhile, are spent cocooned by the fire, ensconced in the warm embrace of the Elena Armchair, or else below deck in the generous kitchen-cum-living room, the scene of many a lively game of backgammon.
