The Supreme Court has issued a notice to the Centre, Jammu and Kashmir, and Rajasthan regarding the arrest of activist Sonam Wangchuk. The hearing was in response to a habeas corpus petition filed by his wife, Geetanjali Angmo, who claims the detention is illegal and that she has not been allowed to meet him. The central issue debated was the non-provision of the grounds of arrest to the family. The Solicitor General stated that the grounds were provided to the detainee as required by law. However, the court questioned the Centre, asking, “Why can you not give it to the wife? What is wrong with serving that notice of grounds of detention to the wife herself?” . Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, representing Angmo, argued that without the grounds, the family cannot legally challenge the detention. The Apex Court did not pass any orders and has scheduled the next hearing for the following Tuesday.
