Today I’m stripping back the layers of old upholstery, beginning with the seat base and removing the jute webbings from underneath. (The webbings form a solid platform to hold the springs above in place.)

Next I’m cutting out the springs and popping them aside to reuse later! You can see the materials the Victorians used which include an animal hair fibre (the black stuff) and coir fibre (ginger coconut husks). All of which I will be putting back (new) into the chair when it comes to the upholstery build up, yes we still use animal hair and coconut fibre today!!
