WATCH LIVE: Senate convenes to consider judicial nominations as shutdown continues for 30th day | Senate Republicans | CNBC TV18
As the government shutdown approaches a month long with no end in sight, federal lawmakers and state officials are scrambling to blunt the pain of missing services such as the first lapse Nov. 1 in SNAP food assistance since the program was created.
The Senate has postponed its confirmation hearing for Donald Trump’s nominee for surgeon general, Casey Means, after she went into labor with her first child, CNN reported, citing a Senate committee spokesperson. Means was due to be the first nominee ever to appear by video link before the health, education, labor and pension committee due to her pregnancy.
Vice President JD Vance will lead a roundtable at the White House on Thursday afternoon focused on how the shutdown is impacting aviation, according to a White House official.
Senate Majority Leader John Thune blocked an effort by Democratic Sen. Ben Ray Lujan to move his bill that would have directed USDA to use its contingency funds to fund SNAP.
Republican and Democratic lawmakers remain at a stalemate on finding a government funding solution to end what is now the second-longest shutdown in U.S. history. The Senate failed for the 13th time on Tuesday to advance a bill that would reopen the government until Nov. 21. The House remains out of session this week. Georgia Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene -- who has been critical of Speaker Mike Johnson’s shutdown strategy -- spoke up on a private GOP conference call Tuesday and urged leadership to bring the House back as well as articulate a plan to address the expiring Affordable Care Act tax credits. Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One during his Asia tour, President Donald Trump suggested he's willing to meet with Democrats on health care after the federal government reopens.
Food aid under the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program for 42 million Americans is due to run out on Saturday without more funding. On Tuesday, 25 states and the District of Columbia filed suit against the Trump administration over its plans to withhold SNAP benefits, arguing the law requires the government to provide funds for November.
