Sweet Fermented Rice (酒酿, Jiu Niang) is a traditional Chinese dessert. According to my granny, it "warms your inside" and improves blood flow. Some research suggests that it has similar health benefits as yoghurt, and is dairy-free. Some say it's anti-inflammatory, and aids in digestion too. In the chilling winter months, a hot porridge of sweet fermented rice can help you feel warm, strong, and energised.

No sugar is added, as the sweetness derives from the starch in the rice (during the fermentation process, yeast and bacteria break down the starch into simpler sugars like glucose and maltose, which are responsible for the sweet taste.).
