On May 4, 2026, a firing drill for the large-scale US-Philippine military exercise "Balikatan" was held in Ilocos Norte, the northernmost province of the Philippines. Japan is participating fully for the first time this year. Approximately 40 members of the Japan Self-Defense Forces (JSDF) participated in a training exercise simulating artillery fire from land against an enemy landing from the sea.
