A new study from Pompeii examined DNA evidence extracted from the plaster casts of individuals who were killed in the volcanic eruption of Mt Vesuvius that buried the city of Pompeii. It shows that of the individuals tested several were recent immigrants to the city from the eastern Mediterranean. It also showed that several interpretations of the individuals based on the shape and orientation of the casts are not supported by the DNA evidence.
