There are really two different kinds of development or growth that you can think about horizontal development and vertical development.
What most people are talking about and thinking about right now is horizontal development. So if you think of the human being as a container, a glass of water, and when we talk about horizontal development, we're talking about skills and capabilities, we are pouring water into that container into that glass. And we're adding skills and competencies. That's great, right, I may not know how to conduct a performance review. And so I can go to a training program on how to conduct a performance review for an employee. However, if I don't have a level of maturity, or sophistication, or a way to step back and really evaluate that employee's performance in the context of the group and the organization and their own trajectory of development, that conversation may not really be effective, even though you've taught me how to give a performance review.
So the difference is that when you talk about vertical development, we're talking about actually taking that container and making it bigger, not just about adding more skills and competencies. So when we talk about vertical development, can I grow my perspective, can I grow the way that I look at the world, the employee, the organization, in such a way that I can support my own you know, I can hold more complexity and manage dilemmas and hold polarities, the both and the end and be able to support other people doing the same thing.
