what is an archipelago?
An archipelago is a group of small islands closely scattered together. They can be scattered in large lakes, rivers or oceans. Japan is An example of an archipelago. Japan has an archipelago. It consists of four large islands called Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu.

How are archipelago formed?
Most archipelagoes are made of oceanic islands. The islands were formed by volcanoes erupting from the ocean floor. Some archipelagoes are continental islands formed only after the last ice age about 11,550 years ago. As glaciers retreated, sea levels rose and low-lying valleys were flooded forming these continental islands.

What is the difference between an island and an archipelago?
An island is one land surrounded by water. Whilst an archipelago is the name of a group of islands. There are the 3 largest Archipelagos in the World.
1. The Malay archipelago: It was formed by glacial retreat and has more than 25,000 islands.
2. Canadian Arctic Archipelago: It contains 36,563 islands.
3. New Guinea Archipelago: It has an area of 7,86,000 km².
