The United States is phasing out traditional visa and passport requirements for select travelers under a new digital entry system.

Through the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA), citizens of Visa Waiver Program (VWP) countries like the UK, France, Germany, Japan, South Korea, and Australia can now enter the U.S. without needing a physical visa or passport stamp.

The process is 100% online. Travelers simply register on the Department of Homeland Security’s official ESTA portal, fill in their information, pay a $21 fee, and get approval within hours. The authorization allows stays of up to 90 days for tourism or business.

However, ESTA doesn’t guarantee entry — final approval comes from U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) upon arrival.

Currently, this privilege doesn’t extend to Latin American nations such as Mexico, Argentina, or Colombia, but negotiations to expand the program are ongoing.
