Who doesn’t love Brasilia?

Manufactured circa 1960s, the Brasilia line takes inspiration from the modern capital of Brazil. The Brasilia line is a direct translation of architecture to furniture. Clear inspiration can be seen between the arches of the Palácio do Planalto or cathedral of Brasilia.

While it’s easy to love the Brasilia design the condition of this piece was the opposite. This piece had seen it all and was begging for a restoration.

This restoration was an extremely time intensive and complex process to bring this beauty back to life.

What I did:

▪️Completely disassembled the piece
▪️sanded the piece down to raw wood with 150 grit
▪️used oxalic acid to bleach out the water marks
▪️steamed the dings and dents to try and pop them out.
▪️filled any remaining dings with epoxy putty
▪️reglued any loose bits
▪️sanded with 180 up to 220 grit
▪️stained the piece
▪️sprayed a heavy coat of custom mixed toner
▪️sprayed clear coats (sanding between coats 400 grit)
▪️Cleaned the hardware & hinges
▪️reassembled the piece
▪️staged and photographed
▪️sat back and enjoyed the view

I don’t know exactly what the factory did to these pieces prior to finishing but the walnut veneer acts nothing like any other pieces I refinish. Brasilia truly is a one of a kind restoration process. Due to this you’ll see Brasilias refinished in all colors as the wood provides very little on its own. Maybe the wood was bleached? For the color I went with a medium walnut with amber undertones

Do you like the new look? 👀
