First American tests positive for deadly hantavirus after cruise ship evacuation from Tenerife Canary Islands as another shows mild symptoms.

One American passenger from the MV Hondius hantavirus outbreak has tested positive after being evacuated from Tenerife in the Canary Islands. A second American is showing mild symptoms while the remaining group has arrived in the United States for monitoring at the Nebraska biocontainment unit in Omaha.

This marks the first confirmed US case linked to the deadly Andes hantavirus outbreak that began on the Dutch expedition ship which departed Ushuaia Argentina on April 1 2026. The ship arrived in Tenerife on May 10 after being denied docking in Cape Verde. So far there are at least 7 confirmed cases and 3 deaths total.

Health officials are actively monitoring 17 to 18 American passengers who were on board. Several other early disembarkers from Saint Helena have scattered to Texas Georgia Arizona California New Jersey and other states. The long incubation period of up to 8 weeks means more cases could still appear.
