Can you expand on what "duration of status" means and why F, J, and I visas are treated differently?

Most nonimmigrants are admitted to the U.S. until a specific end date. However, F, J, and I visa holders are admitted for the duration of status (D/S) — meaning for as long as they maintain their visa conditions.

For F-1 students, this covers the time to complete their academic program, any post-completion Optional Practical Training (OPT), plus a 60-day grace period.
For J-1 exchange visitors, it’s the duration of their program plus a 30-day grace period.
For I visa holders, it’s tied to the length of their media assignment or employment in the U.S.
