Vallarpadam Church or Basilica of Our Lady of Ransom.
is an Ancient Church and a very famous center of pilgrimage in the Ernakulam district of Kerala. Its one of the oldest European churches in India which was built by the Portuguese Missionaries in the year 1524. The church is dedicated to the Holy Mary of Vallarpadam which is commonly referred as "Vallarpadam Amma. the history says that Vallarpadam Amma has saved her devotees life several times from violent storms.

In May 1752 there was a great Miracle which raised Vallarpadam a famous pilgrim center. There was a young Nair Lady named Meenakshiyamma, member of palliyilveedu, lived at Vallarpadam. One day while she was sailing in a boat with her sonto their family temple at Mattancherry for the first solid food feeding (Choruttal) of her son, there arose a storm and the boat capsized. While Meenashiyamma and her son sank in the back water she pleaded Vallarpadathamma "Please help us' , and promised that they would be her adimas ( salves) if they were rescued.
Fr, Miguel Correya, the then parish priest had a dream and as per the instruction in that dream, he asked fisherman on the third day to cast a net in the river and Meenakshiyamma and her son were rescued.
After the great Miracle Meenashiyamma and her son spend their life in cleaning the Church Surroundings,
From that day onwards, people especially those who sail in the boats and ships come to Vallarpadathamma and clean the courtyard as Meenashiyamma did. There is a strong belief that Vallarpadathamma will protect those who come to the Church and surrender themselves as adimas ( salves) to Her. So let us make our heart pure through confession and surrender ourselves to the protection of Vallarpadathamma.
