Former minister and Congress leader Shamanur Shivashankarappa who is also is the national president of All India Veerashiva Mahasabha has condemned the government decision to divide the Lingayats and Veerashaivas. Speaking after the working committee meeting of the Mahasabha held on Friday, he said, the state government under section 2D had accepted our request for ‘Lingayat and Veerashaiva Lingayats ( those who follow Basava Tatva) for minority status and has recommended the same under 2C to the union government. It is unconstitutional to force a Tatva (principle) on a community. Hence the state government should withdraw the decision immediately. In the year 2013, the Mahasabha had appealed to the Union Government to give a separate religious status to Veerashaiva- Lingayats and this appeal is still under consideration. The committee has decided to urge the union government to accept the appeal made in the year 2013.
