Welcome back, fellow furniture painters OR Newbies wanting to learn! In this quick tutorial, we'll delve into the art of toning out red tannins in timber to achieve that flawless finish you desire.

1. Understanding Red Tannins: Some Tanins in the natural timber can be challenging. especially red tanins. found mostly in Balinese teak furniture. This can impact the overall finish if the desire is to have a natural lighter look.

2. Supplies You'll Need:
Sander, various grit sandpapers, clear sealer, paint in neutral tone. I like to use a colour with a slight yellow base. water, paint brush, clean cloth, stain if you desire for toning after wash mix applied.

3. Preparing the Surface: The preparation is very important. Clean your piece thoroughly down prior to sanding to remove any dust, mould etc. Sand your piece removing all the old stain / laquer. Starting from low grit paper working up to fine grit sandpaper. Ensure that you remove all the dust prior to the next step

4. Here is the suprise step. Apply 2 x Coats of clear sealer. I prefer to use water base sealer here. This helps to lock and block in the tanins to prevent and tanins bleeding through. Allow the sealer to completely dry before applying the paint wash.

5. Mix your choice of paint colour with water to create a wash mix. consistency like milk. Brush in long directions working along the grain of the timber. Wipe off excess paint with a clean cloth. repeat this application again if required. light hand sand in between coats

6. Once satisfied apply a clear coat of your sealer. X2 coats. You also have the option to add stain colour if you wish.

7.Choosing the right colour paint to start is important when working with any red / orange timber. As mentioned using a neutral colour with a yellow base has been my success along with sealing the timber first prior to painting the wash.

Tip: If ever in doubt do a test patch first
