In the 1930s, maintaining the Eiffel Tower was highly manual task. To protect the iron structure from corrosion, workers had to repaint the entire tower by hand. This meant climbing directly onto its exposed lattice framework, often hundreds of feet above the ground, carrying buckets of paint and basic tools with them.
At that time, there were no modern safety systems like harnesses, secured platforms, or protective gear. Workers balanced on narrow iron beams with open space beneath them, relying entirely on their own stability and experience. Since the tower is not a solid structure but an open network of metal, every section had to be reached individually, making the process slow, precise, and extremely risky.
The reason for this effort was essential. The Eiffel Tower is made of iron, which is constantly exposed to weather and moisture, leading to rust over time. Regular repainting acts as a protective layer, preventing corrosion and preserving the structure’s strength and appearance.
Even today, the tower is repainted approximately every seven years, using dozens of tons of paint. However, modern crews now use advanced safety equipment, scaffolding, and controlled access systems. While the purpose of the task remains the same, the conditions have changed dramatically, making it far safer than it was nearly a century ago.
